The driver will pick you up from your Riad at 8:30 to start off on your day trip to the Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley from Marrakech. During our journey towards the High Atlas Mountains, the itinerary takes you past Tahanout, a Berber village located approximately 35 km away from Marrakech. Similar to numerous towns and villages in Morocco, Tahanaout is home to a Jewish cemetery.
Next, we reach the village and mausoleum of Moulay Brahim, a renowned Moroccan Sufi saint who passed away in 1661. Here, you can share a glass of tea with a local Berber family, who will kindly show you a traditional hammam and a bread oven. Upon reaching the Toubkal National Park, your journey continues to Asni, a charming Berber town renowned for its regular and weekly local markets, known as ‘souks’.
Driving further eastward from Asni, you enter the Ourika Valley, surrounded by lush gardens, fruit orchards, quaint villages, and a variety of cafes and restaurants. The Ourika River gracefully descends from the high mountains, passing through Asguine, Aghbalou, and Oulmes, and ultimately reaching the village of Setti Fatma.
This part of the mountains is excellent for hiking, which can be organised with a local Berber guide. These hikes provide an opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes and gain a deeper understanding of the local Berber life in the mountain.
