2-day desert tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga – itinerary:
1st Day: Ouarzazate – Erg Chegaga dunes
Departure in the morning at 08:30 from your riad or hotel, and you venture south on your 2-day desert trip from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga. You travel over the Anti-Atlas Mountains as far as Agdz, a oasis town well-known for the variety of its palm dates. As you start to descend the Tizi-n-Tinfifite pass (1660m), you will be amazed by the splendid views of the extensive green oases and the innumerable palm trees, all indicating the beginning of the Dra’a Valley.
After a visit to Kasbah Tamnougalte, you travel north via the Dra’a Valley’s unlimited palm trees and green oases and along the ancient Caravans Road as far as Zagora, the last town before the Sahara Desert and the venue for lunch. Here, you can visit a local green pottery co-operative and an old Quranic library.
Then, you continue further south as far as M’hamid, the end of the paved road and the gate to the mighty Sahara Desert. You continue to Erg Chegaga dunes with about 65km of off-road driving through the varying features of the Sahara; ‘erg’ (dunes), ‘hammada’ (stony desert) and oases.
At the campsite, you check in to your tent and enjoy a relaxing glass of tea and Moroccan biscuits. Then, you take a camel ride to the summit of the Erg Chegaga dunes (300 m) to enjoy the sunset. These dunes are far away from civilization, and the silence and the expanse of the sand are overwhelming.
Back at the camp, dinner is served under the Sahara starlit sky, followed by an evening of nomad music and drumming around a campfire. You spend the night in your tent, equipped with a private toilet & shower, king-sized bed, mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets & carpets, lamps and beautiful Moroccan furnishings, all tastefully arranged to enhance your stay.
2nd Day: Erg Chegaga Dunes – Ouarzazate:
If you wake up early in the morning, you will be treated to an amazing sunrise with stunning dune colours and captivating shadow play. You will also have some free time to wander around the dunes and experience the tranquillity of this magical place.
Back at the camp, breakfast is served. Then your 2-day Erg Chegaga desert tour from Ouarzazate continues through another 80km of the Sahara Desert with varying scenery: Lake Iriqui, where you are likely to experience a vast mirage in the heat. Vincent L05/11/2024Verified Amazing desert experience We did the 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Erg Chegaga desert, in the south of Marokko. Very impressive route through the Atlas mountains and villages, old Berber villages, Kasbah, Draa Valley, spectacular rock formations, and of course the majestic Erg Chegaga that is a lot less crowded than Mergouza. We had the best driver, Lahcen, who was very kind, attentive, thinking ahead, calm, organised, great driver off-road, knows a lot about the places we visited, knows the best places for great panoramic pictures and good restaurants. I recommend. Þröstur J27/10/2024Verified Great introduction to the medina We booked the Marrakesh highlights tour from Moments in Morocco as a private tour on our first day and were so lucky to have Youness as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and fun and we enjoyed the tour very much. We breezed through the queues at the museums and got our bearings in the medina. I highly recommended to get a guide as soon as you arrive and I heartly recommended Moments in Morocco.Tripadvisor rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 147 reviews
